Who Is a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
Candidates for blepharoplasty generally want to obtain a more youthful appearance by reducing age-related aesthetic concerns. These issues can be found above, below, or surrounding the eyes. Otherwise, ideal candidates will be in relatively good health; will not be a smoker (or will be prepared to quit directly before and after the surgery); and will have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure.

What Does the Blepharoplasty Consultation Entail?
The eyelid surgery consultation with Dr. Ereso is a chance to review your medical history to ensure you are physically healthy enough to undergo treatment. Dr. Ereso will also assess your eyes and facial anatomy and ask you to describe your ideal surgical outcomes. Together the two of you will develop a treatment plan that meets your anatomical needs and aesthetic goals.
How Should I Prepare for Blepharoplasty?
Dr. Ereso will provide a complete set of pre-operative instructions once your surgery is booked. Importantly, you must not smoke, drink a lot of alcohol, or take blood-thinning medications in the weeks leading up to surgery. Depending on your age and health, Dr. Ereso may ask you to have some lab tests done prior to surgery or see your primary care physician for a check-up.
How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Blepharoplasty can treat the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both simultaneously. The scope of treatment is based on your specific age-related concerns and what you hope to achieve from surgery. Local anesthesia or anesthesia using sedation are different options which can be used to keep you comfortable throughout surgery.
Upper Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid surgery is performed through an incision in the upper fold or crease of the lid. Through the incision, Dr. Ereso removes excess sagging skin and lifts and tightens the tissues. He also restores displaced fat to its normal position. After the surgical modifications have been made, Dr. Ereso closes the incision with small sutures.
Lower Blepharoplasty
Lower eyelid surgery can be performed one of two ways: through an incision just beneath the lower lashline, or through an incision on the inside of the eyelid. Through the incision, Dr. Ereso lifts and tightens the skin and tissues. He can restore fallen fat deposits to their original position to smooth out puffiness or bags underneath the eyelids. When Dr. Ereso is finished, he closes the incisions with small sutures.
What Does Recovery from Blepharoplasty Involve?
After upper or lower eyelid surgery, your eyelids may feel tight, tender, or numb. You can expect mild bruising and swelling around your eye area. Most of these aftereffects subside within a week or two after surgery. Dr. Ereso will advise when it is safe to resume work, exercise, and other daily activities after surgery.
Can Blepharoplasty Cause Scarring?
As a major surgery, blepharoplasty may cause a certain degree of scarring. With this in mind, Dr. Ereso can usually hide the scars from upper blepharoplasty incisions within the natural crease of the eye; once healed, these scars are usually barely perceptible. Meanwhile, there is generally little (if any) external scarring with lower eyelid surgery, as the incision is typically made directly just under the lashline or on the undersurface of the eyelid, leading to an unseen, internal scar.
What Are the Potential Risks of Eyelid Surgery?
Possible complications of eyelid surgery can include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Dry eyes
- Adverse anesthesia reactions
With these in mind, rest assured that the risk of complications is quite low when blepharoplasty is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. Dr. Ereso will go over the risks of eyelid surgery with you prior to your procedure.
Is Non-Surgical Blepharoplasty Possible?
While there is no existing non-invasive alternative to blepharoplasty, certain non-surgical treatments can address age-related concerns surrounding the eyes – just on a much smaller scale. For instance, crow’s feet can be reduced with chemical peels or skin resurfacing. In addition, wrinkles and creases can be combated with cosmetic injectables. Dr. Ereso would be glad to discuss these options in greater detail during your consultation.
