Overcoming Fears: Plastic Surgery Trends Amid the Pandemic
There is much to be apprehensive about in today’s world, with its oppressive burdens of pandemic, economic privation and social isolation. But new statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) suggest that fears related to plastic surgery have not increased, even as the environment which surrounds us has become a place of high anxiety.
In fact, some procedures are getting a second look by patients who have been reassured by the smart safety protocols put in place by trusted medical professionals like Bay Area plastic surgeon Dr. Alexander Ereso.
Optimism Amid Adversity
A May consumer survey by ASPS found that nearly half of Americans who had not previously undergone a plastic surgery procedure were receptive to doing so in the near future. Patients who had at least one procedure in the past are even more likely to choose a second one, despite the current worldwide health emergency, according to the organization.
ASPS followed that up with a survey of their own members, and discovered that nearly two-thirds of plastic surgery practices saw an increase in virtual or “telemedicine” consultations in the spring. Based on these interactions with patients, ASPS members reported heightened interest in the following procedures: Injectables such as dermal fillers, followed by Botox, breast augmentation, soft tissue fillers, liposuction and tummy tuck.
Prospective patients may still have some of the traditional fears associated with surgical procedures, such as pain, scarring and the possibility of a disappointing or unnatural-looking result. But extrapolating from the ASPS data, it seems clear that most Americans are confident that doctors are taking the necessary steps to keep patients safe and offices immaculate. This is certainly the case at Alexander Ereso Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, where Dr. Ereso has made high standards of safety and hygiene a top priority.
