Breaking Down the ASPS 2018 Plastic Surgery Stats & Trends
Recent reports show a nationwide rise in both plastic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic treatments. This include this year’s annual report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons. The report is widely considered to be the most thorough census on plastic surgery.
Read on as Dr. Alexander Ereso breaks down the 2018 ASPS plastic surgery stats.
Most Popular Surgical Procedures
According to the ASPS, more than 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed last year. Breast augmentation was the most popular, with 313,735 procedures performed. Body contouring procedure are also extremely popular, with liposuction being the second most popular procedure (246,354 procedures) and tummy tuck being the fifth most popular (129,753 procedures). Nose reshaping (213,780 procedures) and eyelid surgery (206,529 procedures) rounded out the top five most common surgical procedures.
Most Popular Non-Surgical Procedures
Out of 15.9 million non-surgical cosmetic procedures, the top procedures included botulinum toxin type A treatments (7.44 million procedures) and soft tissue fillers (2.68 million procedures). Chemical peels (1.38 million procedures), laser hair removal (1.1 million procedures) and microdermabrasion (709,413 procedures) were also among the most popular non-surgical procedures.
Other Key Findings from the ASPS Report
The ASPS reported an increase of nearly 277,000 cosmetic procedures over the previous year. Americans spent more than $16.5 billion on cosmetic plastic surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, which was 4 percent more than they spent in 2017.
Body enhancing procedures were on the rise, with more liposuction, non-invasive fat reduction and breast augmentation procedures performed in 2018 than in 2017. Buttock augmentation with fat grafting also saw a notable spike in popularity in 2018.
Although still very popular, two facial surgeries – nose reshaping and eyelid surgery – saw a small dip in 2018, which may be attributed to the rise of non-surgical nose reshaping and eyelid puffiness improvement.
