What Are Marionette Lines?

Marionette lines are grooves that extend from the corners of the mouth to the jawline. Also known as “oral commissure lines,” they form when the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle pulls down the mouth corners. These age-related blemishes tend to deepen over time as collagen depletes, often creating a sad or angry appearance even when the face is relaxed.
Thankfully, Dr. Alexander Ereso offers several potential solutions to soften marionette lines and restore a more youthful expression. For instance, BOTOX® Cosmetic can be injected into the DAO muscle to temporarily relax it and reduce the severity of marionette lines. Alternatively, dermal fillers can restore volume in the face, smoothing out marionette lines and rendering them much less noticeable.
While cosmetic injectables are typically the first choice for addressing marionette lines, they tend to be most effective for mild to moderate cases. For those who want to combat deeper, more pronounced marionette lines (particularly patients over 50), a facelift may be the best option. This surgical procedure aims to lift and tighten the underlying tissues and skin, generally providing much longer-lasting and more dramatic results.
