How to Know If It’s Time for Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that improves the appearance of the eyelids. This popular procedure can revitalize the appearance of your eyes.
With eyelid surgery rapidly becoming one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the United States, it’s never been more important to choose the right surgeon. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ereso of Alexander Ereso Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics has decades of experience in the field of plastic surgery. Below they discuss the transformative effects of eyelid surgery in detail.
Who is A Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery may be a good option for anyone experiencing the following:
- Dark circles and/or bags under the eyes
- Excess skin in the upper eyelid (obscuring the fold)
- Excess skin or wrinkling in the lower eyelid
- Drooping, loose skin in the upper eye that may, if untreated, affect vision
- Puffy or distended upper eyelids
It’s important that you and your surgeon sit down and analyze the root causes of these conditions. Occasionally, cosmetic problems in the eyelids are the result of a sagging brow line or relaxation of the forehead skin that may require an alternative cosmetic surgery (e.g., brow lift).
Is It the Right Time for Me?
If you’re wondering whether there’s a “right time” for cosmetic surgery, don’t worry. There’s no set age or time when an eyelid surgery magically becomes right or wrong. If you and your surgeon agree that a blepharoplasty will improve your appearance and health, there’s no reason to shy away.
That said, if you suffer from certain conditions (excess skin that obscures vision, for example), it’s better to go for a blepharoplasty sooner rather than later.
Eyelid Procedure Process
There are three main types of blepharoplasty.
- Upper eyelid surgery: Your surgeon will manipulate the upper eyelid so it is firmer and excess skin does not obscure the line of sight.
- Lower eyelid surgery: Your surgeon will remove wrinkles, eliminate excess skin, and improve your overall appearance.
- Double eyelid surgery: Your surgeon adds a crease in the upper eyelid in order to widen (or largen) the appearance of the eye.
Like all cosmetic surgeries, blepharoplasty comes with recovery time. You can expect to return to work after about a week and light exercise after about three weeks. The majority of the swelling and bruising should subside within the first week.
