Can Breast Enhancement Surgery Cause a Hernia?

Cosmetic breast procedures – such as breast augmentation and breast lift surgeries – have remained highly popular for years. Many women choose these options to enhance breast size, restore lost volume, or address sagging caused by aging or pregnancy.
While breast enhancement procedures are generally very safe when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, there is always some level of risk involved, as with any major surgery. A common concern among potential breast augmentation and breast lift patients is whether they should worry about developing a hernia.
Fortunately, the likelihood of developing a hernia after breast augmentation or lift surgery is extremely low. That said, some breast augmentation patients report feeling a “shifting” sensation following implant placement and worry it could be an epigastric hernia. In most cases, this sensation is completely normal and simply indicates that the implants are still settling and dropping into place (a process that typically takes around three months).
