What to Expect While Recovering from Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure performed on a person’s lower and/or upper eyelids. The procedure is usually done to correct bags under the eyes, droopy eyelids, or both.
During eyelid surgery, tiny incisions are made along either the crease of the upper eyelid or the lash line of the lower eyelid to remove excess skin and fat deposits and create a more youthful, refreshed appearance.
During the postoperative recovery process, patients need to follow their surgeon’s instructions about how to take care of their healing eyelids. Below, Dr. Alexander Ereso shares what patients can expect while recovering from eyelid surgery.
Immediately After Surgery
After the procedure is done, lubricating ointment and cold compresses are applied to your eyes. Frequent cold compresses in the early postoperative period is important and will limit the extent and length of appearance of bruising and swelling.
Your surgeon may prescribe medications to take orally or antibiotic and steroid drops to reduce inflammation and the risk of infection.
Common Side Effects
While no two patients are completely alike, most people experience bruising and swelling around their eyes. Some people’s eyes also feel dry and irritated at the incision sites.
To reduce bruising and swelling, use ice and cold presses and keep your head elevated. Lubricating eye drops can be used to help with dryness and irritation.
Caring for Your Eyes
As your eyes heal, it’s important that you protect them from the sun. You need to wear dark-tinted sunglasses whenever you’re outside until your eyes have healed fully.
You also should stop smoking and drinking alcohol until three weeks after your surgery. (You shouldn’t smoke or drink for the two weeks leading up to your surgery either, as these activities can make you more prone to excess bleeding.)
Duration of the Recovery Process
Recovery time depends on the extent of the surgery, the amount of bleeding that occurred, and the patient’s overall health before going into the surgery.
For most patients, side effects subside after 10-14 days, at which point patients may resume normal activities, including exercise. It can take up to a few months for some people’s eyes to heal fully, however.
